WOMEN IN POLICING
A work by the Police History Society, edited by Tom Andrews, forward by Pauline Clare CBE, who in 1995 became chief constable for Lancashire police, making her the first ever woman in the 103 years of the police service to be made chief constable.
The book charts the progress of women in policing from WWI (and before!) through
to the present day, by taking a look at around a dozen individuals throughout that
time from a wide variety of forces, ranks and backgrounds; detailing their conditions, achievements and obstacles they overcame.

This is a reprint of a chance survival of a rare item of police ephemera from
the days before there was a police force as we know it. The original volume
is owned by the Lancashire Constabulary, by whose kind permission it is
reproduced. It was found in the strong room in the Chief Clerk’s office in the
old H.Q. in Jordon Street, Preston and was rescued and re-bound by the then
Chief Clerk, Mr. W.W. Thornton in 1936. The book purports to be compiled with permission, from official documents and contains a royal coat of arms. On page VI can be found a three page advertisement for the book itself. The contents include a unique collection of names and dates in police history and it is also possible to reconstruct the rank structure, size and organisation of those police forces that existed in 1844.
